How to plan five days in Istanbul

Istanbul layers Byzantine, Ottoman and modern life across two continents, best explored through compact historic districts, ferry journeys and market neighborhoods.

The strongest route begins with byzantine and ottoman core, then moves through topkapı and archaeology and bazaars and süleymaniye. Keep the final two days flexible for weather, reservations and the places that deserve more time.

The day-by-day route

Day one covers Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Hippodrome. Day two focuses on Topkapı Palace, museums and Gülhane. Day three continues with Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar and hilltop mosque.

Day four is built around Ferry views, Galata and İstiklal, while day five leaves room for Kadıköy market, Moda and neighborhood ferries. This sequence limits unnecessary backtracking.

  • Day 1: Byzantine and Ottoman core — Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Hippodrome.
  • Day 2: Topkapı and archaeology — Topkapı Palace, museums and Gülhane.
  • Day 3: Bazaars and Süleymaniye — Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar and hilltop mosque.
  • Day 4: Bosphorus and Beyoğlu — Ferry views, Galata and İstiklal.
  • Day 5: Asian Istanbul — Kadıköy market, Moda and neighborhood ferries.

Food, transport and reservations

Use use istanbulkart across metro, tram, ferry and bus. Build meal stops around Meze and grilled fish, Simit and Turkish breakfast, Kebabs and regional pide and other established local specialties rather than crossing the destination for a single famous venue.

Reserve the busiest heritage sites from official sources, verify current entry rules, and keep enough time for security, weather and ordinary local travel.
