Choose four bases, not ten flags
A strong first route can use London, Paris, one Swiss or Rhine-region base, and Rome, with four to five nights in each and carefully chosen transfer days. Another equally valid route can stay entirely within Iberia, Italy or Central Europe. The principle is more important than the exact cities.
Match the corridor to the season
Summer requires heat and crowd planning, winter changes daylight and mountain transport, and shoulder seasons can still produce closures or strikes. Compare train and flight journeys door to door and avoid flying merely because the airtime looks short.
- •Days 1–5: first major city and arrival recovery.
- •Days 6–10: second connected base.
- •Days 11–15: smaller regional base or landscape.
- •Days 16–21: final major city with departure access.
Protect the rhythm
Keep every fourth or fifth day relatively light. Book only the most constrained museums and trains, use luggage that can move through stations, and preserve one flexible day for weather or fatigue.
