Japan Travel Guide: How to Plan a First Countrywide Trip
Build a first Japan trip around regions, seasons and realistic rail journeys instead of an oversized checklist.

Choose one geographic spine
For 10–14 days, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka form the simplest first route. Add one carefully chosen extension—such as Hakone, Hiroshima or the Japanese Alps—only when it fits the season and transport pattern. Northern Hokkaido, subtropical Okinawa and rural Kyushu deserve separate planning rather than being squeezed into the same circuit.
Plan by season and pace
Spring and autumn demand early accommodation planning, summer requires heat and festival strategies, and winter changes transport assumptions in snow regions. Allow four or five nights in Tokyo, at least three in Kyoto and enough unstructured time for station navigation and meals.
- •Compare individual rail fares before buying a pass.
- •Reserve only capacity-limited experiences.
- •Use luggage forwarding selectively.
- •Keep one weather-flexible day.
Verify the practical details
Check visa requirements for your passport, earthquake and severe-weather guidance, current transport notices and rules for medicines before departure. Official national and local sources should outrank social media advice.
