Check the road before choosing the route

California coastal roads can be affected by weather, landslides, fires and construction. Verify the official highway status before committing to Highway 1. Keep an inland alternative and never treat a scenic coastal drive as a fixed-speed transfer.

Divide the ten days

Spend three nights in San Francisco without a car, then collect a vehicle for three or four route nights. Finish with three nights in Los Angeles, choosing accommodation near the districts that matter most.

  • •San Francisco: neighborhoods, waterfront and one bay-area day.
  • •Middle section: coastal route only when fully open and appropriate.
  • •Los Angeles: cluster days by area to reduce driving.
  • •Add national parks only by removing another major section.

Drive for the landscape, not a checklist

Plan fewer stops with enough daylight to experience them safely. Avoid leaving luggage visible in a vehicle, respect parking restrictions and check wildfire, air-quality and weather information from official agencies.
